CMS Final Rule on Physician Payment Policies, Primary Care Services Incentives and Preventative Health Benefits for Medicare Beneficiaries

Final rule from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that will augment the benefits for the "Initial Preventive Physical Examination," an annual visit for the purposes of developing a prevention plan for the patient. The final rule also implements a provision from the health care reform law that provides a 10 percent incentive payment for primary care services. The rule also creates an incentive payment to general surgeons performing in areas designated as "Health Professional Shortage Areas" by the Department of Health and Human Services. The rule will also allow certified nurse-midwives to receive the same reimbursements from Medicare as physicians.
